Postcard Showcase:

Mrs. Salmond's Class
Illinois children picked a state insect in 1976. The Monarch Butterfly was chosen. They are black, yellow, and orange. Monarchs visit flowers and migrate to Mexico each fall. They fly many of miles on the long trip! Arlington has its own butterfly garden on the front lawn. I like studying bugs & insects. Some insects protect themselves with sharp pinchers. We see many insects and snakes in southern Illinois. --Skylar, age 7

Mrs. Peter's 2nd Grade
School children picked the Cardinal for their state bird in 1928. A female bird has brownish-red feathers, but the male is bright red! Cardinals eat seeds, small insects, and wild fruit. We see them year-round in Illinois. They love eating sunflower seeds best! My teachers in Arlington are nice and friendly. We live in the southeastern part of the state. --Carmen, age 7
