This is a handout created by Suzy Penna to go with her lesson, Polygons.

Polygons

Your group is to investigate the ________________. At the end of this work your group is to produce a mobile and a presentation about your polygon. The following 8 points are to help get you started.

  1. Use your dictionary to find the meaning of the word polygon, and of your particular polygon.
  2. Investigate the origins of your “word” and record your findings. Identify any other words with similar connections and explain.
  3. Draw a regular version of your polygon.
  4. Draw a concave version of your polygon.
  5. Construct/create a mobile of your polygon with a label.
  6. Predict and investigate the sum of the internal angles of your shape. Comment.
  7. If all angles in your polygon were equal, what size would they be? Explain mathematically.
  8. Discover and share the uses for your polygon in our society.

Present your findings creatively and logically to the class.
