To teach children how to divide things into equal parts, complete the recipe to make banana drops.

Materials:

  • Book - The Doorbell Rang
  • 1 12 ounce package of semi sweet
  • chocolate chips
  • 1 cup chopped peanuts
  • 1 banana for every 4 children
  • small saucepan
  • stainless steel bowl
  • baking sheet
  • wax paper
  • small mixing bowl
  • wooden spoon
  • toothpicks
  • hot plate

Plan:

  1. This lesson is an extension I have created to go along with our Math series on equals. After teaching the lesson we read the book, The Doorbell Rang by Pat Hutchins.
  2. We then count how many bananas we have (1 for every 4 children). We decide how many children we need in each group per banana. This may take awhile. Usually what I do is put a banana on each table and have the children go to a table of choice and then start from there.
  3. After we have divided into equal groups, we decide how many pieces we need out of each banana. We use a pencil or pen to mark where to cut the banana on the skin.
  4. When we have divided them all into equal parts the children cut their own part with a plastic knife.
  5. I then start the chips melting in a small sauce pan. Stir continuously.
  6. Line your baking sheet with wax paper and put each child's name on a spot where their banana drop will be.
  7. Place the peanuts in a small bowl beside the baking sheet.
  8. When the chocolate is completely melted, have the children stick a toothpick into their banana drop. Dip it into the chocolate and then peanuts. Place the drop on the baking sheet.
  9. Freeze!
  10. Review how many children were at each banana and other concepts of the lesson, how you figured this out etc...
