Space – Make a Constellation

Grade Level: Preschool By: Karen LaVarnway, Preschool Teacher (Ages 3–5)

Young children can explore stars, patterns, and early astronomy concepts while building fine motor skills. This simple hands-on activity introduces constellations in a fun, creative way.

  • Learn that stars form patterns called constellations

  • Use fine motor skills by placing stickers and drawing lines

  • Experiment with simple materials to create their own star patterns

  • Gain early exposure to space concepts through books and discussion

Materials

  • Blue or black construction paper

  • 8–10 star stickers per child

  • Chalk

Plan

  1. Introduce the Topic
Talk with children about stars and constellations.
Read a simple space-themed book if desired (e.g., There’s No Place Like Space or How to Catch a Star).

  2. Create the Star Field
Give each child a sheet of dark construction paper.
    Provide 8–10 star stickers.
Have children scatter their star stickers around the page in any pattern they choose.

  3. Connect the Stars
Give each child a piece of chalk.
Invite them to connect the stars with lines, creating their own constellation.

  4. Share and Display
Display all finished constellations together to resemble a night sky full of stars.
