Group Turkey Wreath
Paula Diekhoff, Preschool Teacher – Students work together to make a classroom Thanksgiving wreath. They practice fine motor skills such as cutting and pencil-rolling to create colorful paper curls for the turkey’s feathers.
Materials
- Brown poster board
- Brown construction paper
- Assorted color construction paper
- Glue
- Scotch tape
- Child-size scissors
- “Primary” (fat) pencils
- Colored copy paper
Teacher Preparation
- Cut a giant “lifesaver” shape from brown poster board (this will be the turkey’s body).
- Cut a large “thumb” shape from brown construction paper to resemble the turkey’s head.
- Create eyes, beak, and wattle from scrap construction paper; glue them to the turkey head.
- Glue the head onto the inside of the brown lifesaver shape.
- Cut two turkey feet from orange construction paper and glue them to the bottom back so they stick out.
- On colored copy paper (8.5 × 11), draw 1-inch-wide strips across the paper.
- Prepare many colors ahead of time—lined and ready for students to cut.
Student Activity
- Students choose a sheet of lined colored copy paper and cut several strips.
- Teacher tapes one end of a strip to the table and demonstrates how to roll the strip around a pencil to create a curl.
- After students roll and remove the curl, the teacher transfers it (with tape still attached) to the turkey wreath and tapes it down.
- Students continue making paper curls until the wreath is completely covered.
Comments
- Colored copy paper curls more easily than construction paper.
- To speed up the craft, pre-cut strips ahead of time.
