Create a fun class-made book to reinforce counting, number recognition, and text patterns inspired by Ten Apples Up On Top! by Theo. LeSieg (Dr. Seuss).
Materials

Ten Apples Up On Top! by Theo. LeSieg (Dr. Seuss)

11″ x 17″ tagboard (cut lengthwise into two long strips)

Apple cutouts (paper or calendar-style)
-
Student photos
-
Glue
-
Pencils / markers
Instructions
-
Prepare the Pages
Cut each 11″ x 17″ tagboard sheet in half lengthwise to create long book pages. Prepare one page per student. -
Add the Text and Photo
Glue a student photo at the bottom of each page. Print or paste the sentence frame:
“________ has _____ apples up on top.” -
Assign Numbers
Give each student a number by having them draw a numeral card or select a random number from 1–10 (or 1–11).
Provide each student with the correct number of apple cutouts. -
Count and Create
Have students count out their apples and glue them above their photo.
They may create patterns if the apples are two-sided (such as red/green). -
Complete the Writing
Students complete the sentence frame with their name and number of apples.
Examples:
“Tiarra has 1 apple up on top.”
“Emily has 2 apples up on top.” -
Assemble the Class Book
Arrange the finished pages in number order and bind them to create a class counting book. -
Read and Revisit
Add the completed book to your classroom library so students can reread it throughout the year.
