Overview

This creative classroom game helps students identify, spell, and correctly use homophones through a fun guessing activity. It requires minimal prep and gets the whole class involved.

Materials Needed

  • Whiteboard or chalkboard

  • Markers or chalk

  • Optional: a list of homophones for reference

Instructions

Choose one student to be “It.”
Send that student outside the classroom or ask them to cover their ears.

Create your sentences.
As a class, select two or three sets of homophones. For each one, write a sentence on the board using the word “teapot” in place of the homophone.  Example (scroll down for more):

I saw a teapot of cake left on the plate.

The two knights decided to call a teapot.
(Answers: piece/peace)

Bring “It” back in.
The student must read each sentence aloud and guess the correct homophone.

Scoring:

1 point for identifying the correct word

2 points for correctly spelling the homophones and placing them in the right context

Rotate players.
Let a new student take a turn as “It” for each round.

Optional Variations

  • Let students work in teams

  • Change the placeholder word from “teapot” to something fun like “banana” or “spaceship”

  • Use more advanced or tricky homophones for older students

Teacher Comments

This game is a hit with students and keeps them engaged while reinforcing important language skills. It’s also a great filler for those few extra minutes at the end of class.
