Equal Parts Snack Recipe & Activity With Bananas
Children learn how to divide things into equal parts with this activity to make banana drops.
What you’ll need:
- Book – The Doorbell Rang
Ingredients:
- 1 12-ounce package of semi sweet
- chocolate chips
- 1 cup chopped peanuts
- 1 banana for every 4 children
Cooking Equipment:
- small saucepan
- stainless steel bowl
- baking sheet
- wax paper
- small mixing bowl
- wooden spoon
- toothpicks
- hot plate
Lesson Plan:
- This lesson is an extension I have created to go along with our math series on equals. After teaching the lesson we read the book The Doorbell Rang by Pat Hutchins.
- We then count how many bananas we have. (Remember, you will need 1 for every 4 children). We decide how many children we need in each group per banana. This may take a while. Usually what I do is put a banana on each table and have the children go to a table of choice and then start from there.
- After we have divided into equal groups, we decide how many pieces we need out of each banana. We use a pencil or pen to mark where to cut the banana on the skin.
- When we have divided them all into equal parts the children cut their own part with a plastic knife.
- I then start the chips melting in a small sauce pan. Stir continuously.
- Line your baking sheet with wax paper and put each child’s name on a spot where their banana drop will be.
- Place the peanuts in a small bowl beside the baking sheet.
- When the chocolate is completely melted, have the children stick a toothpick into their banana drop. Dip it into the chocolate and then peanuts. Place the drop on the baking sheet.
- Freeze!
- Review how many children were at each banana and other concepts of the lesson, how you figured this out, etc.
